Herb Kohl Scholarship Essay Contests

These are descriptions of the various scholarship announcements that Memorial receives via the US mail throughout the year. We post them in the chronological order that they are due, beginning in September.   Remember to check Eligibility Requirements.  It takes time to fill out an application, but you can get good at doing them efficiently, and you can't win money you don't apply for.  Good luck!!!!

AES Enginerring Scholarship

What: The AES Engineering Scholarship offers high school students the opportunity to further their education. Any high school student is eligible; the scholarship is awarded based on an essay application.

Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship

What:The Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship is available to high school seniors who participate in at least one of the 27 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools. You must have at least a "B" average to qualify for this award. Selection is based on academic achievements, community service involvement, and athletic accomplishments.

What:The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is open to high school seniors who plan to pursue a degree at an accredited post - secondary institution in the U.S. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be eligible for this award. Additionally, you must be one of the following: US citizen; US national; US permanent resident; temporary resident (in a legalization program); refugee; asylee; Cuban-Haitian entrant; or humanitarian parolee. Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarship

What: Students interested in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science and Medical Laboratory Science should strongly consider this award. Students must attend an accredited university in the State of Wisconsin.

What: Up to three Dane County high school seniors who plan to enroll in Edgewood College will receive a four-year full-tuition scholarship. This award covers the cost of full-tuition, course supplies, a laptop and books. While enrolled, awardees must demonstrate academic excellence and perform 200 hours of community service annually.

Madison South Rotary Club Scholarships

What: Up to ten graduating high school seniors who are continuing their education will receive $1,000 scholarships. Seniors should demonstrate financial need and preference will be given to those attending Madison Area Technical College (Madison College).

What: Madison Area Retired Educators’ Association (MAREA) is offering scholarship grants of $1,500 to three high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in education. To apply, any senior planning to become a teacher needs to write an essay describing why they want to teach.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship

What: All African-American seniors who are planning to attend a two or four-year university or college are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and demonstrate six months of community service.

What: Sudden cardiac arrest is an increasingly common medical condition that many people are unaware of. Purpose
The purpose of the Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship program is to recognize student leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement.  It is the goal of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation to encourage Wisconsin youth to pursue post-secondary education in a public or nonpublic university, college, or vocational/technical college.  The Foundation awards $10,000 scholarships to 100 Wisconsin high school graduates each year.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Applicants must be graduating high school students who intend to enroll in a postsecondary institution, which may be a public or nonpublic university, college, or vocational/technical college.  Students who are residents of the State of Wisconsin, are in good standing, and who demonstrate probable success in postsecondary education are eligible to apply.  This is a competitive scholarship.

Eligibility is not limited by GPA, class rank, or any other school or program conferred status (ex. National Honor Society). Any student who meets the above eligibility criteria may apply.

Selection Criteria
Students will be evaluated on their leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement.  In addition, students will be evaluated on their ability to clearly articulate goals in each of four areas: future educational goals, personal life goals, community/society service goals, and career goals.

Each student must submit three letters of recommendation, one from each of the following categories:
        1. Teacher;
       2. Counselor or Principal;
       3. Community member or family friend who is not affiliated with your school district.

Letters of recommendation will be evaluated on how well they describe the student's improvements, contributions, and successes. Letters may be from a current or previous year’s teacher, counselor or principal.

​Public school students must submit their completed applications no later than Tuesday, November 7, 2017.  Religious and independent school students, and homeschool students must submit their completed applications by December 1, 2017.
