“To what extent was the Weimar Constitution the main reason for the Nazi Party’s rise to power”

Paragraphs on Political Change:  Hitler’s emergence as Chancellor of Germany on January 30th, 1933 marked the beginning of the long-awaited ‘National Revolution’ that would precipitate into Nazi dictatorship. While Buckley and other critics of democracy have stated that “Hitler came to power democratically”. This appears to be an unconvincing argument - the political manoeuvring between Hindenburg, Von-Papen and Schleicher known as ‘The Backstairs Intrigue” was more the reason for Hitler’s rise to power. Some historians would argue that the old ‘conservative’ dictatorial right; Hindenburg, who brought Hitler to power in the hope that he could be repressed and used to serve their autocratic interest. As Alan Bullock more rightly argues “Hitler did not seize power; he was jobbed into office by a backstairs intrigue”. In March 1932 the Nazis received only 30 percent of the vote, losing badly to Hindenburg. Evoking the authoritarian powers of Article 48, Hindenburg proclaimed martial law and in hoping to establish a majority government and boost the reputation of the democratic republic, ran two more presidential elections that year. In July the Nazis became the largest party in the Reichstag – supporting Bullock’s argument that the Nazi’s did not ‘seize’ power but achieved a rise in power through electoral success; in which Papen would later use to his advantage. However as the November election came about, the Nazis began to splinter under the excessive exploitation of Article 48 that called so many elections and Nazism appeared to considerably suffer. What Bullock appears to consider is that by 1932 the Nazi’s were not strong enough to claim power and their morale was exhausted; there was not enough money to campaign and continue propaganda programs following the Great Depression in 1929, supporting Davidson argument that the ‘most powerful…’ out of desperation “…turned to Hitler only as a last alternative”. No other conservative option appeared to remain suggesting how much Germany’s economic turmoil motivated political figures to deal with Hitler. In many ways Hitler’s public and political popularity rose as a consequence of the Great Depression illustrating why he was able to gain electoral support despite Germanys deteriorating environment. Papen had every intention in creating a presidential dictatorship using the conservative majority and boasted that "within two months we will have pushed Hitler so far in the corner that he'll squeak". After being replaced by Schleicher in December, Papen increased efforts to persuade the President that Hitler would be fitting as Chancellor. As Papen recalls, being Hitler’s Vice-Chancellor would effectively help him ‘push’ around and exploit Hitler and the Nazi’s in order to establish his own autocratic government. Papen clearly illustrates his plan of using Hitler, hence showing the importance in how much it helped Hitler come to power. Papen’s boastful account portrays his clear intentions in which he aimed to significantly limit Hitler’s role in the cabinet - ignorant to the fact that instead, he would soon end up in that ‘corner’. Historians have differed when interpreting how much Hindenburg chose to appoint Hitler as Chancellor on his own accord. An account by Hindenburg’s State Secretary, Otto Meissner noted that he “was extremely hesitant until the end of January, to make Hitler Chancellor. He wanted to have Papen again as Chancellor”. Hindenburg had a strong antipathy for ‘that Bohemian corporal’ and was reluctant to welcome Hitler into the cabinet. Meissner further added that “Von Hindenburg stated emphatically that he had to respond to this…with a clear and determined ‘no’ "in which his view suggests that Hindenburg’s dislike for Hitler may have prevented his Chancellorship. The extent to which Meissner’s view reflected Hindenburg’s has to be questioned – as it should be considered, being a supporter of Hitler, Meissner appeared as a witness in the trail of major Nazi War criminals, proposing a clear reason to doubt his account. However Hindenburg’s ‘hesitant’ manner gives further credence that he was perhaps not as oblivious and ignorant as Papen to Hitler’s potential as Chancellor. Von Der Goltz contradicts Meissner, presenting that Hindenburg in fact “did nothing to stop his veneration playing into the hands of the Nazi regime… and willingly participated in the stage-managed shows of unity with Hitler” Goltz argues that Hindenburg in fact ‘willingly’ allowed Hitler to achieve power through exploiting the cabinet and along-side Papen contributed to deploying Hitler a high position. However what should be noted is that the President “was now a tired old man weary of all the intrigue. He seemed ready to give in ”Therefore suggesting that Goltz’s view that Hindenburg really stood firm against Von Papen’s planning is a lot less convincing than the one which suggests that Papen's “political buffoonery helped usher the Third Reich into power by manipulating the elderly President.

Personal Description:
I have a first class honours degree in History and a Ph.D. I taught History, Politics (and also sometimes Psychology and Sociology) in a local grammar school for many years. I am patient, friendly and approachable and I also have three children of my own who have recently been through the GCSE/A level process and so have a wide experience of the problems that students can experience during their education. I am up to date with all the current requirements of the different examination boards. I really enjoy teaching and like being able to offer my students one-to-one attention during tuition.
I am willing to travel to the Liverpool area (time permitting) but am afraid that in that case I will need to add an extra £3 to the quoted price in order to cover the high transport and tunnel costs.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for 27 years, mainly in secondary schools but also in Further Education where my students ranged from 16 to 60 years. I have taught History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology up to AS/A2 level and I have a great deal of experience of helping students prepare for the requirements of these examinations and of assisting them in securing excellent grades so that they can fulfil their potential. I have also taught English up to GCSE level.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in flexibility. Students have different needs which often change during a period of tuition and I believe in full consultation with the students and their parents. I have a proven track record in building up students' self-confidence, helping them cope with the demands of the examinations and helping them to make the most of their abilities.

Personal Description:
PLEASE NOTE: I AM CURRENTLY UNABLE TO PROVIDE TUITION DUE TO A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE. MANY THANKS.

I have a first-class honours degree in History and a master's degree in American Studies (History). During my master's, I specialised in vernacular history, particularly the social, ideological and political significance of post-9/11 Islamic hip-hop.

I am a freelance marketing consultant, specialising in content, copywriting and strategy. I love to read, write, paint and travel.

Teaching Experience:

I have over ten years' tuition experience, having initially worked as a peer History tutor at Bridgewater State University (USA) in 2008 followed by a position working as a GCSE English tutor for the Tutor Trust in 2011-12. I have been tutoring privately since 2009.

At the Tutor Trust I delivered small group tuition sessions and taught large group revision classes in schools and colleges across Greater Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

TUITION
I take a structured approach to tutoring and develop a clear plan with objectives for the student and I to reach together. I work at the student's own pace and provide bespoke tuition which is tailored to the student's needs and learning style. My sessions are clear, engaging and stimulating.

My tutoring style is to facilitate rather than teach. I guide the student in the right direction and provide additional support to help with study skills, time management and organisation skills. Ultimately, I encourage the student to build more confidence in his/her own ability.

PROOFREADING & THESIS SUPPORT
I provide proofreading services for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework. I check grammar and spelling to an excellent standard and offer in-depth feedback on analysis/argument, structure, knowledge/understanding, sources and referencing, and style and presentation to help students to achieve the grade they are aiming for.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as a copy writer and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and via Skype. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have French, Latin, History and German A-levels at A or A* grade and have been tutoring since I was in sixth form. have experience teaching a range of ages and am skilled at tailoring classes to your needs. I recently spent 6 months in German-speaking Namibia teaching English, German, History and Music, in individual and group classes to pupils from 7 to 18. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language to ages 8 to adult at a summer camp in Kazakhstan, and have spent 3 summers teaching at a summer camp in Texas.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that there is no one-size fits all approach to teaching and listen to my pupils to fit out what works best for them. Learning languages should be fun, so I use a range of resources and topics to engage my pupils in their language learning. I combine this with providing a detailed understanding of the grammatical mechanisms of the language, as these are vital for fluency.

Personal Description:
I am a Tutor in English for Academic Purposes at a large UK university. In this role I teach both Academic English and General English.

Over the past thirteen years I have taught in the UK, Italy and Libya. I have taught in private schools, state schools and universities. In addition, I have taught students of all levels from beginners to advanced and all ages from 3 to adult.

I am an experienced online tutor with over 250 hours taught via Skype.

Teaching Experience:

Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes at the University of South Wales (5 years)

Teacher Trainer/English Teacher British Council Libya (3 years)

British Institutes Trento, Italy (2 years)

Private tutor in TESOL (2 years)

Cambridge IELTS examiner

Cambridge IGCSE Assistant Examiner

General English, Academic English and English for Specific Purposes (e.g. Business English)

Tutoring British and European History ages 11-18 (UK)

Tutoring Approach:

In teaching English as a foreign language I follow the communicative approach. This means plenty of communication between the student and tutor, rather than spending the whole lesson working through grammar exercises.

My lessons are student centred, which means that each lesson is about the student. My materials are carefully tailored to the individual student and not a 'one text fits all' course book. I try to make my lessons relevant to my student's needs, for example, if you are a chef I base my lessons on cookery; if you work in a shop I base my lessons around retail; and if you are studying for IELTS or residency, I will tutor you for that. Just tell me what you want to do and I will do my very best to help you realise your dream.

Personal Description:
I am a thirty-four year old father of one, with a first class History degree (BA Hons) from the University of Oxford and a Masters in Print Journalism from the University of Sheffield (Distinction).

I offer bespoke one-to-one tuition in and around Sheffield. I specialise in tutoring History at A-Level and GCSE but I also offer help with university applications and Oxbridge interview/exam prep.

Teaching Experience:

I'm new to professional private tutoring but I have a long track record of personal academic success and have worked informally with several A Level students in the past, all of whom progressed to Oxbridge or other red brick universities. I also have almost ten years experience working with children and young people participating in extra-curricular activities across Sheffield.

Tutoring Approach:

I am approachable, friendly, and patient, but I'm also passionate about History and English. I aim to make learning fun, challenging, and rewarding and believe that enjoying a subject is the key to success. I always aim to bring the subject to life and to help students engage, but I also look to help them work effectively and intelligently so they can make the best of limited time.

Personal Description:
I am a patient, friendly and enthusiastic BA/MA History graduate with a background in teaching and archives/museums.

My subject strengths are: History, English Literature and English Language.
I specialise in: improving literacy and academic writing skills, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL), preparing for IELTS testing, coaching for exams/interviews and supporting students with special educational needs.

I have a History BA from Bristol University (First, 2008) and an Africa/Asia History MA from SOAS (Merit, 2011). For my MA I specialised in Chinese history. I am also a qualified Archivist (PG-Cert., 2:1, Dundee University, 2015).

I am passionate about history, languages, and arts. At school I studied Welsh, French and German and I have been learning Mandarin since 2010. I understand what it is like to study another language!

I have just moved to Leeds from Taiwan (May 2017) where I was a TEFL teacher and private English tutor.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching background spans 13 years. As a teaching assistant in mainstream schools (London and Bristol) I taught students with specific educational needs, such as ESL or dyslexia.
I have taught in residential schools for students with complex difficulties, including severe autism or Down's Syndrome.
I have mentored students with poor literacy skills and a background of truancy in order to build their confidence and motivate them to enjoy learning.

As a TEFL teacher I have taught English to children (3-18 years) and adults in India, China and Taiwan. I have taught one-to-one classes, and classes with between 2-25 students.
In Taiwan and China I privately tutored preparatory skills for IELTS (an international English proficiency test), business English and academic writing skills (e.g. dissertation and thesis writing). I coached one undergraduate preparing to study an MA in English Literature in the UK.

Tutoring Approach:

As a child my family moved a lot and I went to many types of schools: state, private, bilingual, Steiner, Montessori, single sex and co-educational, so I am familiar with different teaching styles.

I work hard to enable my students to reach their learning goals and feel motivated to continue learning. I quickly find out each individual's learning needs, likes and dislikes so they will feel comfortable in our lessons and inspired to progress.

I am very flexible and willing to tailor our lessons to my students' preferred learning methods: I am able to adjust the structure, level and content of our lessons.

I inspire my students to believe in themselves and push themselves forward whatever their pace.

Personal Description:
I am a former coach and current personal trainer who is currently in my final year studying a BSc Sports Rehabilitation at the University on Nottingham. I have completed A levels in Australia at age 15, then A levels in the UK - and finally, a BTEC, in order to transition from the arts to science. I am a fiction writer, currently in the process of completing my book. I have continued to enjoy performing arts after A Level, having performed in several plays and musicals over the years. I lived in mainland China for 8 years as a young child and have a confident grasp on Mandarin Chinese.

Teaching Experience:

As a former coach, I've had a lot of experience working with both children and adults alike and understanding how to help each person learn as an individual. I currently tutor several extremely bright academics up to university level, all receiving outstanding grades in the areas that I have been able to help with.

Tutoring Approach:

I adapt my teaching style to each student's leaning style. I believe it is essential to meet the student where they are at and create a positive and engaging learning environment. I want every student to feel listened to, valued, encouraged and supported every step of the way. I aim to equip each student with clear understanding of individual topics, writing style and grammar so they leave with confidence in themselves and the ability to achieve.

Personal Description:
I was born and grew up in Oxford and I have been living in York for the last three years studying for my degree in Writing, Directing and Performance. I have a passion for language and helping others to learn.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully-qualified teacher of English as a second language, holding a Level 5 Certificate from Trinity College London. I have been tutoring privately for six months. In that time I have taught EFL, GCSE and A-Level English.

Tutoring Approach:

What I love about teaching is the discussion between teacher and pupil and the sense of discovery that comes with that. I'm a great communicator, with good A-levels in English, History and Theatre Studies and a friendly, engaging style. : I believe in a personally tailored approach to teaching. What works for some people won't work for others, so I am committed to finding the best approach to suit the student. I like to encourage a relaxed but focused working environment with a friendly and engaging style.

Personal Description:
I hold a BA on Classics and Modern Greek from the University of Athens and a Masters Degree in Modern Greek Studies (Language, History, Culture) from the University of Birmingham. I have a long-standing interest (7 years) in tutoring within a learning framework and teaching is my passion. I work as a teacher at the Greek School of Ayia Triada in Birmingham and I am a translator for a Greek Editions House.

Teaching Experience:

Teacher at Greek School of Ayia Triada Birmingham (2017-2018)

Teacher at Social School of the Municipality of Athens (2013-2015)

Private tutor (2011-2017): Give private lessons to students of primary [Greek, History, English SL] and secondary school and to undergraduate students of the faculty of Philology. [Literature, History, Ancient Greek and Latin].

Tutoring Approach:

The learning objectives, which my lesson plans aim to, will be based on teaching methods, which accommodate different styles of learning. Differentiation according to the level of each students's abilities (high, medium, low) is the touchstone of the teaching process and one of my principals as a teacher. Energizing activities which engage pupils in the lesson, such as use of flashcards for learning new vocabulary, classroom quizzes, classroom display works and powerpoint presentations are just but a few of my teaching methods.

Personal Description:
With over 90 dissertations completed with a specialist in Qualitative Research (Critical Discourse Analysis, Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Heuristic and Relational Analysis) all achieving 2/1's and above I can offer complete support.

I also provide essay support for students, teaching content style, how to research, reference and build an argument to achieve a good 2/1 with quick results or for the student who wants to learn about critical analysis and logic a more comprehensive support to gain a 1st.

I also provide exam preparation and support for those who have anxiety and need to prepare well ahead for the examination. As a trained therapist I adopt a person centred style to achieve results.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is extensive, having taught at Kings on the Medical Course for a number of years, Birkbeck and SOAS as well as South Bank University. Currently I teach on the Masters Course and have supervised numerous dissertations to a high level. My expertise is in qualitative methods where I did one of the first phenomenological Doctorates looking at the lives of male substance users, whilst working with them therapeutically.

I currently work with students to do qualitative dissertations ranging from Kings, UCL, LSE, Goldsmiths, Queen Mary's and City Universities. I can work all the way up to Doctorate level and have worked with four counselling psychology students, two criminology, one Sociology and a Psychology student. At Masters level I have worked with law students, nurses, Social Workers and Sociology students.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is drawn from Bruner, Vygotsky and Rogers, based upon scaffolding the student to build their confidence and expertise so they begin to develop their own expertise. Within an exam for example students require a deep knowledge of understanding of what is required and therefore need support to be able to do this. Essay writing requires a different set of skills, such as being able to research a topic and move to building an argument. For many students this requires considerable scaffolding at first.
